Another Time, Another Place

Bono's recorded a special contribution to the upcoming vinyl release 'Another Time, Another Place'.

The double 10" album, produced for U2.com subscribers, captures the band playing live at London's Marquee Club in 1980, as they took early songs on the road across Ireland and the UK.

On Side 4 of the the limited edition set, Bono looks back to September 1980, and four consecutive Mondays that the band played the famous Soho venue.

'The first Monday it was half full, the second Monday nearly full, the third Monday they had to turn people away, the fourth Monday, there were queues round the block, across the road and Wardour Street looked like an A-bomb had landed on it – we thought of it as "The Irish Invasion" – it’s incredible what a few hundred people believing in you does for your self confidence...'

Here's the track listing.

  • The Ocean
  • 11 O'Clock Tick Tock
  • I Will Follow
  • An Cat Dubh - Into The Heart
  • A Day Without Me
  • The Electric Co.
  • Things To Make and Do
  • Stories For Boys
  • Boy Girl
  • Out of Control
  • Another Time, Another Place: U2 At The Marquee Club, September 1980 by Bono

'Another Time, Another Place' is now in production and we'll be emailing qualifying subscribers with dispatch details in the next few weeks. In May U2 also start making the tracks available to download.

U2 Concert Ready with New Sound System, Improved Health For Bono

Bono/ U2TOURFANS

Bono/ U2TOURFANS

May 14th can't get here any faster for some U2 fans. Bono has been on recovery since last falls bike accident. The boys have been in Vancouver working on the new tour.

Its different for sure, with no opening band, we have to wonder what will be the walk in music however lets talk more about what we have learned over the last few days.  The New York Times has had access to the boys over the past week to give us some insight to what we can expect.

The concert will be two sets with an intermission with the first half pretty much as fixed set and the second set to be a bit more flexible with arbitrary selections.

U2 has always been on the cut edge side when it comes to technology not only from a sound prospective, stage and lights too. The band has been working on a new audio system that will suspend the speaker arrays from the ceilings pointing down, this will provide a complete immersive experience across the area floor.

The sound will be intense for everyone with no gaps within the house. Its considered to be uniformly transparent with the volume to be constant.

Now the stage will feature three risers, one "I" shaped one for "innocence" a round one shaped like  lower case "e" for "experience and walkway called the divider stage to signify the "passage from innocence to experience. Designed by Es Devlin.

Remember the band promised another album while don't worry about the tour interference they the finest mobile recording studio heading out with them.

Bono has been writing songs with a few titles almost ready "Red Flag Day", "Civilization" and "Instrument Flying"  We should expect the next album to be within the moment, which could mean more POP music.

So how is Bono you ask?  Well within the TIMES report Bono stated that the recovery is going well however  "It feels like I have somebody else's hand," the singer said. He likened the feeling to rigor mortis. "They say that nerves heal about a millimeter a week, so in about 13 months I should know if it's coming back." We should not expect Bono to be playing guitar.

So we are about 14 days out from the start and it sure looks to be another amazing tour. Be sure to download your mobile app today to be apart of the experience.

U2 Rehearsals

The boys have been focusing on getting ready for the show. This tour promises to be different and in fact we might been getting a little insight to how different based on what some fans have been capturing around the venue. Remember while they rehearsal a lot of songs only a few may appear in the set list and remember that venues that have multiple  shows can expect to have different set lists from night to night.

A fan posted this online today with of course by now you have seen the video (its on our facebook page ) of Bono talking and a couple of choice words.  We have been getting a couple of bits and bites however we really want to try to hold on posting every detail of the rehearsal. Let the boys have their time. Its going to be here and gone within a few minutes.

U2 Ticket sales Sluggish

Someone call the marketing machines back to work. This is not the U2 we all know. Right now most all of the shows are NOT a sell out. Correct NOT A SELL OUT. Yes some of the GA locations are sold out and the lowest level of ticket prices have been sold out for weeks.

However the most venues have plenty of tickets. Another writer from a fan site did some really deep data mining to come up with some great key points. Sherry Lawrence  has done some pretty amazing work on uncovering some interesting facts. After I had a chance to really dig into her data I totally agree with the baseline data points.

Yes I do read other fans sites, that is not the point.  Coming from the music business its very clear that record spins equals sales. ( of course not a 1 for 1 ) The record companies have always found ways to increase their number of spins to be able to get their music in front of an audience.

Today the music business looks a bit different spins are not replaced by down streams however down streams numbers have increased in weight within audience consideration.  Music comes from many different sources today. Itunes Radio, Spotify just to name a few; all provide access to an audience. U2 fans for the most part are 51% female and right in the middle of the sweet spot for marketing dollars. 28/54  the data suggest as the audience grows older that they might be less inclined to buy tickets.

However this is not true at all. U2 fans along with a couple of long standing bands like the Rolling Stones have very large pools of global fans that come out to shows in large numbers.

So back to back to the marketing machine. Its time to pump up the noise U2 has a packed field of bands heading out this summer. RUSH, Rolling Stones, Van Halen to name a few.  Its all about that mighty ticket sales.

Enjoy some U2 music with your day and be sure to download our newest application.

ON THE ROAD WITH U2: My Musical Journey Part 3

ON THE ROAD WITH U2: My Musical Journey

by Deena Dietrich @OnTheRoadWithU2

Part Three

After the U2 360 Tour ended in 2011, I wrote my U2 tours memoir recalling all 75 U2 concerts I had been to since 1992. I had met a literary agent at the U2 show in Anaheim who offered to help me publish my book. When that did not work out, I decided to self publish as so many do. I did a little research and found that Amazon has a great company called CreateSpace where I could publish my book. I uploaded my file, designed the cover, and I was a published author!

I realized a dream by writing and publishing my U2 memoir. You could say I have found what I was looking for, which is ironic since my favorite song is “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” This song has literally been my theme song my entire life.

I have been enjoying the journey searching for what makes me happy, pursuing my passions. Now because of U2, actually because of Larry Mullen, I have found what I’m looking for. Because of Larry Mullen, there is U2.

Because of U2, I have traveled all over the United States visiting great places, meeting great people, seeing 75 great U2 shows and writing about all of it.

My favorite U2 concert was on the Elevation Tour in Providence, Rhode Island on October 31, 2001, Larry Mullen’s 40th birthday. This is what happened,

We wore our “Larry Mullen Band” shirts standing up front at the rail between Bono and Adam. I held up the birthday card for Larry as U2 walked on stage, but I don’t think Larry saw it. There were many signs that night including one saying, “Bono let Larry sing,” but that did not happen. During “Elevation,” Bono sang, “Celebration” then said, “Happy Birthday.” After “Stuck in a Moment,” Larry’s 40th birthday celebration began. Bono led the audience in a chorus of “Happy Birthday” to Larry. Then a birthday cake was brought out, and Larry pretended to throw it out into the audience. Bono said, “Larry likes chocolate cake.” Larry took the microphone and came to the front of the stage to talk while Bono sat behind the drums. Larry said, “Bono can’t play the drums” then continued with “It took me 40 years to get up front. I’m glad I’m spending my birthday with 18,000 of my closest friends. I feel like I could borrow money from you.” Bono asked for a bottle of champagne, which he shook up a la ZooTV and sprayed the audience. Edge took a swig, then Larry drank and continued to drink for the next few songs. After “Kite,” Larry got off the drums and made a B line for me. I got my card and shirt in hand so I could give it to him, but that’s not why he was there. Larry gave me his champagne bottle, with champagne still in it! I couldn’t believe it! Larry wanted to share his birthday with ME! He wanted ME to have a drink on his birthday! I was SO excited I didn’t even know U2 changed the set list and played “Wild Honey.” I thought it was “Staring at the Sun” as in the past shows. I didn’t really come around until “Please.” After “Pride,” Larry came back over to me so I could give him the birthday card and Elvis shirt. I said, “Thank you. Happy Birthday.” He smiled and said, “Thank You.” It wasn’t much of a conversation, but it was very meaningful as Larry looked into my eyes just as he had in Jersey when he gave me his drum stick a few months prior. Later on, Bono noticed our “Larry Mullen Band” shirts, shook his head and smiled.
