U2 Opening Night Thoughts

Smoke cleared, Fans gone home, Riggers down from the lights and we are still reporting the updates.

Wenesday night and we thought we would review the set list and break down some thoughts and share with you. Of course you know already about our sites, youtube.com/u2tourfans / twitter.com/u2tourfans / U2tourfans.com - We will accept all your videos and comments as well as photos.

Now for the review. Remember we collect your thoughts and share hem

Opening with two non-singles

Breathe and No Line On The Horizon are at present not singles. It seems likely Breathe may become the fourth single from the album, but at the moment, the third single, Crazy Tonight, has not even been released commercially. On the Vertigo Tour, the first two songs always contained at least one single - Vertigo or Beautiful Day - and even when the tour began, City Of Blinding Lights was already slated to become a single; its music video was filmed a month into the tour in Vancouver on 27 April 2005. It is worth noting, however, that the public dress rehearsal on 26 March 2005 was before City Of Blinding Lights was formalised as a single and its first two songs were COBL and the Boy non-single The Electric Co.

Going back further, all 93 Popmart shows opened with Mofo and I Will Follow; the former became a single late in the tour while the latter is Boy's most well-known single. All but one Zoo TV show opened with non-single Zoo Station followed by lead Achtung single The Fly. The 7 March 1992 show had Even Better Than The Real Thing rather than The Fly second; it was not a single until June 1992.

Finally, on Lovetown, there is a show opened with two non-singles that requires no qualification or semantics. 30 December 1989 was opened by Bullet The Blue Sky and Running To Stand Still, neither of which were ever singles; in fact, the third song of the night, God Part II, was not a single either and it took until the fourth track, Desire, for a single to show up. At all the other Lovetown shows, at least one of the first two songs was a single, though in the cases of 23 September 1989 and 9 October 1989, In God's Country had never actually been released as a single in Australia; it was North America only. A few other shows could be qualified like this too, but this part of the analysis is bogged down in semantics enough already.

Opening with four consecutive new songs

On the last three tours, it has been the norm for U2 to begin their setlist with one or two new songs before playing an older song. Every single show on Popmart, Elevation, and Vertigo had an old song no later than third in the setlist. This time around, the band have begun with four new tracks before playing an old song fifth. The last time the band played so many new songs to open a show was, famously, on Zoo TV; early shows began with as many as eight new songs and the barest minimum was six.

The separation of MLK and The Unforgettable Fire

MLK has often been played without The Unforgettable Fire, but almost never in the same concert. Only once before have they appeared in the same setlist but not been paired together - 22 April 1987.

Streets opening the encore

Where The Streets Have No Name has been famed as a main set opener, but it is pretty rare for it to open an encore. This previously only happened a handful of times on the Joshua Tree Tour; the last occasion was 13 June 1987.

The dress rehearsal set was the same

"Well, duh," you might be thinking, "what did you expect? After all, it is meant to be a practise run of what the band intend to do on opening night." Actually, based on past precedent, the likely outcome was that the setlist would change; U2 have never before played a public dress rehearsal with the same set as the subsequent first proper concert. A great comparison is Vertigo's dress rehearsal and first show; just have a look at the peculiar setlist order between Love And Peace Or Else and Bullet The Blue Sky at the rehearsal.

Missing in action

A number of U2's standard setlist members have gone missing in action, as is to be expected at the start of any new tour. The most notable disappearance by far is Bullet The Blue Sky - since its debut on 2 April 1987, it had only missed six full tour gigs; five in 1989 and one in 2001. Elevation and Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own have now lost their records of being played at every show since their debuts, a title now held only by One, Beautiful Day, Vertigo, City Of Blinding Lights and the new material.

Returned to action

The following songs have returned after extended absences:

The Unforgettable Fire: Last performed on 6 January 1990.
Ultra Violet: Last performed on 28 August 1993.
In A Little While: Dropped at the end of the Elevation Tour's second leg after 59 performances, it managed just two appearances on the Vertigo Tour - 12 September 2005 and with Brandon Flowers on 5 November 2005.
MLK: This song has struggled to hold a permanent setlist spot since the end of Lovetown. It made just five Vertigo Tour appearances between 3 October 2005 and 22 November 2005.
Walk On: After being played at all but one Elevation Tour shows, it made just eleven appearances on the Vertigo Tour. Furthermore, nine of these performances were acoustic, while this tour, it has been restored to its electric form. The two electric performances on Vertigo were at consecutive shows - 7 November 2006 and 10 November 2006.

And as those of you who have followed our rehearsal reports would know, there are a few other rehearsed songs that will make for some interesting statistics if they appear in future setlists. That, however, is all for now. Stay tuned for the setlist and visual content from Barcelona II, July 2 2009

Blackberry Loves U2 ! U2 Mobile Album Coming Soon

Lots of talk  said about Blackberry's sponsorship of the U2 360 Tour, with very little of it has been said by either Blackberry or U2. When the tour was announced months ago, U2 manager Paul McGuinness promised "new and innovative ways to enhance the mobile music experience on the BlackBerry platform for U2 fans." Research In Motion, creators of the Blackberry, went on a domain-buying spree that left fans with more questions than answers about what was on the horizon.

 (twitter.com/u2tourfan)(youtube.com/u2tourfans)

The tour itself began last night in Barcelona with its high-tech "Claw" stage, the world's first transformable LED screen, and even a live satellite hookup to the International Space Station.

Where was Blackberry? Nowhere.

Research In Motion has published a Blackberry Loves U2 page on Blackberry.com that advertises what it's calling the "U2 Mobile Album."

12

The app/tool appears to have five sections: Album (No Line On The Horizon), News, 360 Tour, Who's Listening, and Gallery. The teaser video on Blackberry's web site offers some hints about what they offer. It appears that fans will be able to listen to the album, watch U2 music videos, view and share photos, read news from U2.com, and even see other Blackberry users on a stadium map during U2 concerts.

All of this seems to be hush-hush for now. There's no announcement on the RIM press release page. The URL of the web page begins with "na," which indicates "North America" -- we couldn't find an equivalent page on RIM's UK web site. The screenshot above references the city of Berlin, which could be a sign they're intending to announce this before the tour reaches Berlin on July 18. Or the announcement could be timed with the July 12 launch of RIM's new phone, the Blackberry Tour 9630. But that's pure speculation on our part.

In any case, it's an interesting preview of what's to come and a sign that Blackberry and U2 won't be quiet about their plans much longer.

The Barcelona U2 360 Tour Review Opening Night Success

U2 kicked of the first tour in three years earlier tonight in Barcelona. The crowd was about 90, 000 plus fans with a live link up to the Space Station. This is one of the biggest concert stages ever built. The U2 360 tour will hit 31 cities across Europe and North America and we can expect it to have a South American leg as well. In all estimates right now sit about 3M people will see the show, not counting the new dates to be annouced in 2010.

The circular plaform inside Nou Camp Stadium had fans all around and inside. Taking into account of the global recession ticket prices average lower to allow for a bigger audience.

Bono thanked the fans for coming out and understood that things are tuff around the world. Many have called the show a high octane, over drive show.

Opening numbers "Breathe, Magnificent saw the crowd come alive as the anthem style song race thur the stadium. The night was filled with a mix of old and new songs, of course the classics including Beautiful Day and Sunday Bloody Sunday. The band dedicated Angel of Harlem to Micheal Jackson who suddnely died at the age of 50 last week.

"We wrote this one for Billie Holiday but we are going to play it tonight for Michael Jackson," said Bono. "Unspeakable talent, that's all there is to say, really," he added, and the song morphed into Jackson hits "Man in the Mirror" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough".

Videos pour in from fans and comments are currently being reviewed for future stories. For now we can all agree the Boys of Summer belongs to U2.

Live Updates Show Ends Great First Night

U2tourfans.com and twitter.com/u2tourfans has gathered the following updates

Here's video from the opening song. Here's a cool Flickr photo. And here's U2tour.de, apparently literally under the bridge. And here's the prettiest Claw photo yet, if you ask me.

Here's another YouTube video from the concert. And here's another video. And here's another great Twitter photo of The Claw.

U2 has done a live linkup to the International Space Station in the middle of the concert, talking to the astronauts,

Bono on screen. The Claw looks gorgeous all lit up. And check this out! More pics: Gorgeous. And another one. And this one. And here's just one more. And here's Bono & Edge amongst the faithful.

Larry on the catwalk, playing a bongo drum that's wrapped around his shoulders. Here's Adam and Edge. And here's some sing-along video, lasts about 30 seconds. And, sit down for this, there was a chorus line of people walking on stage with the Aung San Suu Kyi masks.

11:35 pm BCN time, U2's main set ended.

Its started - Crowds coming in

U2start.com says fans "first in line are signing contracts, probably for interviews." They've also posted a good picture via Twitter of the Tuesday morning scene outside Camp Nou stadium.

#1: Around 3000 people will be let into the inner circle and the first 400 will have a head start of about 10 minutes, according to U2start.com.

#2: U2EastLink has some great photos from Monday's dress rehearsal.

#3: Fans are inside the stadium and here's a pic from 2nd row at the b-stage. U2tour is right up front, too, and posted this photo looking up at The Claw, and this one, too. Ditto for U2gigs and this photo. U2gigs also posted this view from the back of the pitch, along with this one, too.

U2tour.de posted this photo and this one. The merchandise stands are all outside the stadium, so you can't shop during the show. U2start.com says the Aung San Suu Kyi masks are being handed out to fans. Here's a pic.

5: U2tour.de has a great photo with bad news: You can't see the video screen from Row 21 and higher on the 1st level of Camp Nou. Ouch. On YouTube, here's a video of fans entering the pitch.

There are no bracelets this tour, it seems. Instead, fans with GA/floor access are getting ink stamps on their arms, like this one.

Fans are also being asked not to lean against the railings because the bridge that connects the main stage and the outer circle rotates. See this photo.

The news stories are a collection from a number of sources and all copyrights are retained by the prospective holders- @2009

Finally! U2 has a request !

Irish rockers U2 have asked fans attending their concerts to put on masks of Myanmar dissident Aung San Suu Kyi when they strike up the song "Walk On."

The band provided a copy of the Nobel Prize winner's image on its Web site so fans can print it out before the shows on the 360 Tour that begins today in Barcelona.

"Wear it to work or college," the Web site said. "Wear it on the bus or the train. Wear it in the pub or at the shops. And don't forget. Bring it to the show."

Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, since 1990 when she won the popular election and the military junta refused to accept the results.

24 hours to go ! So could these be the songs?

10. Rise Up (The Joshua Tree Remastered B-Side) – I love the rhythm and beat of this song. Plus it’s Christian subterfuge rock! Okay. Okay. I’m an atheist but that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate songs with g(G)od references. As long as it’s not pushing evangelism down my throat, I can dig it.

9. Elvis and America (The Unforgettable Fire) – The album’s pretty good. And there are obvious favorites that I could’ve mentioned like Bad, A Sort of Homecoming, and Pride but this is the song that defines that album for me. Atmospheric. Hypnotic. Everything you wanted in a song about loss.

8. Walk On (All That You Can’t Leave Behind) – While the song is Bono’s love letter to Aung San Suu Kyi, I find that on a personal level I can relate to this song very much. This is all I think about for periods of time—to be able to leave everything behind except those that you absolutely can’t. I dream about walking away from… well, life, the universe and everything.

7. Out of Control (Boy) – A pretty old song but relatively new to me. I like the vitality and the hunger for life that it brings.

6. Acrobat (Achtung Baby) – I like the rage of the melody and the vulnerability of the lyrics. When I was younger, I imagined bodies falling from the sky whenever I listen to Acrobat. It’s a plummet-to-your-death song.

6. If God Will Send His Angels (Pop) – One of the few songs in this techno-infused album that I can listen to again and again. Another straightforward song that’s almost a prayer. I go nuts for stuff like this.

5. I’ll Go Crazy if I Don’t Go Crazy Tonight (No Line on the Horizon) – This is currently my anthem. I listen to this whenever I start taking myself too seriously. Why can’t we act like idiots sometimes?

4. Elevation (All That You Can’t Leave Behind) – This song is just pure fun. I like singing along to it out loud even though I can’t sing for shit. There are songs that, well, elevate the spirit. For me, this is one of them.

3. Miracle Drug (How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb) – I love the entire album. Yahweh, Sometimes You Can’t Make it on your Own, City of Blinding Lights… it’s almost impossible to pick just one song from How to… However, this song touches me in ways no other song can. As egotistical as this may sound, I dedicate this song to myself. I’m special and so are you.

2. Without or Without You (The Joshua Tree) – The album is wall-to-wall greatness but this is the song that defined one of U2’s so-called masterpieces. Popular, yes, but also a valid expression of conflicted emotions for someone who you can’t live with or without.

1. Heartland (Rattle and Hum) – While the song mostly describes an atmosphere and a state of place, it’s also a song about a particular state of mind. But that’s not why I love it though. For all the obvious and not-so-obvious reasons, I carry this song with me always. I associate it with the pain of losing someone you never had to begin with. She feels like water in my hand…

Well we are so close that even the DVD player has been placed on hold. Everything is set, we are still looking for a couple of reporters. Tickets purchased, all set. Bring on the summers best tour.

Spoiler Alert: Appears to be set

As the boys settle in for their long run. This does look to be the final set list. Now that can all change over night again. Remember this its a long tour and lots of new things could appear, like a new album? Calling out to all Barcelona ticket holders. We really would like to get your stories. Email us for a link that you can use to post and update along the night.

2 Days:Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium

THE sun is shining at Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium -- and U2's futuristic new stage, above and right, is taking shape.

The band kick off their '360' tour in the Spanish city on Tuesday and will take in 14 European cities over the summer.

The spectacular stage will allow Bono and the boys to perform in the middle of the stadium, so that fans will surround the band on all sides.

2 days before U2 play their first date, technicians were still putting the final touches to the canopied structure that hovers over the stage.

Lights and lasers are expected to play an important role in the show, and rumours abound that the circular stage may revolve, giving every fan a bird's eye view of the proceedings.

Costing more than €100m to stage and running for the next 18 months, the band has already sold some 2.5 million tickets for its dates throughout Europe and North America as they showcase their latest album, 'No Line on the Horizon'.

U2 Encourage Mask-Wearing Protest

U2 are on the cusp of their 360 Tour, and are asking fans to remember Burmese democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi by wearing a mask featuring her face.

"U2 believe the world must not be allowed to forget Aung San Suu Kyi and every night on the 360 Tour fans are being invited to wear the mask when the band play 'Walk On,' which was written for her," the band's website said today. "Put it on with thousands of others when Larry [Mullen, Jr., drums] and Edge [guitar] strike up the opening bars of 'Walk On.'"

A downloadable mask is on the site with directions, but you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to print the file.

"Wear it to work or college," the post on the website reads. "Wear it on the bus or the train. Wear it in the pub or at the shops. And don't forget. Bring it to a U2 show."

Suu Kyi is a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and won elections in Burma in 1990, but the military junta refused to accept the results. She has spent most of the last 19 years under house arrest.

Suu Kyi was recently tried for violating the terms of her house arrest after an uninvited visitor swam across Inya Lake in Yangon, Burma to visit her house twice. The trial was widely condemned as a sham by the United Nations and western nations.

U2 start their world tour in Barcelona on Tuesday. The tour, which is in support of the recently released No Line On The Horizon, hits Toronto in mid-Septem

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Other artists may be scaling down for the recession, but not U2: Their first U.S. stadium tour since 1997's PopMart will be dominated by the largest set ever built for a rock concert, a monstrous stage nicknamed the Claw that will allow them to play in the round. "The crowd will be all around us," says the Edge, on a break from tour planning. "That energy will just make the performances fly." The band is selling some seats for as cheap as $30, as a nod to tough times and to make the shows accessible to young fans.

"We're talking about resurrecting songs we haven't played in a long time," Edge says. "I have a list of every U2 song -- some I can't remember anymore -- even some of the B sides that we've never played live. We were thinking how much fun it would be to play something like [Joshua Tree outtake] 'Luminous Times.' Certain songs from the last couple of tours, we may not play again. We want to find songs that feel fresh and valid."
