EURO Numbers are in

U2 begins a fourth week atop European Top 100 Albums with No Line on the Horizon (Mercury/Universal), while the European Hot 100 Singles survey is headed for a sixth week by Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" (Interscope/Universal).

Horizon has three remaining No. 1 berths across the region, in Portugal, Greece and Hungary, but falls from the top in Spain, Italy, Switzerland and the Belgian region of Flanders. Lady Gaga continues to lie in wait for U2 to relinquish top spot on the composite chart, with The Fame at No. 2 again, after making climbs of 7-3 in the United Kingdom and 6-4 in Switzerland. But the set is down 1-2 in both Ireland and Austria.

Larry Mullen, Jr.

Lawrence Joseph Mullen was born and raised in Artane, located the north side of Dublin, at 60 Rosemount Avenue.

He had to add the "Junior" to the end of his name to distinguish himself from his father, Larry Mullen, Sr. As Larry's career blossomed, so did his tax bills and his father was the unlucky recipient of them in the early 1980s. Before U2, Larry's previous gigs included playing drums for the Post Office Workers Union Band, and, for three weeks, the Artane Boys Band. Some of his earliest gigs included the St. Patrick's Day Parade on O'Connell Street, the bandstand on St. Stephen's Green, and the pier in Dun Laoghaire.

Larry's music career started when he began taking piano lessons when he was 8 years old. He did not fancy the notion of studying the piano scales or learning music theory, so he gave up the piano and began drumming in 1971. He started taking classes with Ireland's best-known drummer, Joe Bonnie. When Bonnie died a year later, his daughter Monica continued teaching Larry. However, Larry has said that his drumming style is "unteachable" and that spirit and instinct are what guides his technique. He has said that he just wanted to "physically hit the thing," in regard to the drums, so lessons where he couldn't just play were not his cup of tea, so to speak. Larry did return to the piano when he played keyboards on "Yahweh" during the Vertigo tour.

His sister, Cecilia, bought him his first drum-kit in 1973 for £17. He placed a notice at the infamous Mount Temple Comprehensive School in the fall of 1976, and on September 25, 1976, the band auditions began in his kitchen in Artane. Although everyone knows the band as U2, Larry claims that the band's name is really "The Larry Mullen Band."

Growing up, Larry considered his life to be "pretty normal for a while." However, Larry's oldest sister, Mary, died in 1973. Five years later, his mother, Maureen, died in a road traffic accident in November 1978. He says in U2 by U2, "In some ways, both events defined the kind of person I've become. My mother's death certainly catapulted me in the band's direction."

Larry left school in 1978 after passing his Intermediate Certificate exams. Larry said he was offered an opportunity to complete his Leaving Certificate exams, but chose not to as the economy was not doing very well at the time and jobs were difficult to find. While the band was still trying to score a record deal in 1978, Larry worked at Seiscom Delta in the purchasing department for a year. Had he stayed at Seiscom, his career path would have been computer programming for Seiscom's geology department.

In the early days of U2, Larry had to miss some gigs and photo shoots because of the job at Seiscom. For the photo sessions he could not make, friend-of-the-band Derek "Guggi" Rowen stepped in as he resembled Larry to a degree. For the gigs, Larry arranged a stand-in named Eugene from a north Dublin rock band called Stryder. When Larry became injured on the job, running over his toe with his motorbike, Eric Briggs filled in for him on the drums. Bono says in U2 by U2 that there was a period of time where the other three band members almost kicked Larry out of the band because they were not sure how serious he was. Ironically, during the band's first recording session, a CBS record executive suggested that Larry needed to be fired because of his inability to keep tempo.

Also during the early days, Bono spoke to Larry about a local Christian-based fellowship group. Prior to that, Larry grew up with a traditional Catholic background, even serving as an altar boy in church. Larry, Bono and Edge attended the Bible studies with some of their friends from Lypton Village and became friendly with members of the Shalom Christian group. When Larry, Bono, and Edge were told that they should give up rock-and-roll a few years later, they chose to leave the Christian group, instead. Larry said about Shalom in U2 by U2, "The idea was to create a Christian community, where people would live and work under strict Christian standards, When you're young and impressionable it all sounds ideal. But there was something terribly wrong with the concept. It was a bit like the bigger the commitment you made, the closer you were to heaven. It was a really screwed-up view of the world and nothing to do with what I now understand a Christian faith to be. There was huge pressure to follow that path and what made it even stranger was that rather than it coming from the church leaders, it was coming from our friends. I learned a lot though and I also gained a faith I didn't have before, and that's still with me."

He has been with his partner, Ann Acheson, for almost 30 years. They met during Larry's first year at Mount Temple. Together they have two sons and one daughter: Aaron Elvis (born October 4, 1995), Ava (born December 23, 1998) and Ezra (born in February 2001). He has also been a dog owner, thanking his Labradors (JJ and Missy) on past albums. Larry rarely speaks about his personal life, and has been relatively successful in keeping his family life private.

The Edge

David "The Edge" Howell Evans
Born: August 8, 1961
Instrument: Guitars, piano, keyboards, vocals and background vocals

Dave 'The Edge' Evans was born in Barking, Essex, in East London, to parents of Welsh descent, Gwenda and Garvin Evans. When he was a year old, the family - which included younger sister Gillian (Gill) and older brother Richard (Dick) - moved to Dublin, where he has lived ever since. There, he grew up as a quiet yet very intelligent kid. He did well in school – first at St. Andrew's Primary School and then at Mount Temple - and until he met the boys who would be his future bandmates, he wanted to go to university and become a doctor or an engineer.

In the fall of 1976 he spotted Larry's note on the Mount Temple Comprehensive High School bulletin board asking for anyone interested in forming a band. He was the first to respond, and he went to the first meeting in Larry's house with his brother Dick. The Edge showed guitar skills well beyond his age, and the chemistry among the group was obvious from the beginning.

Early in the band's career, Dave Evans was re-baptized by Bono - then Bono Vox - as 'The Edge'. The nickname was inspired in the beginning by the sharp features of his face, but it also applied to his sharp mind and the way he always observed things from the edge.

Despite his previous academic ambitions, Edge's commitment to the band grew to such an extent that when he finished high school, he told his parents he'd take a year off to see where the band and their music would take him.

Along with Bono and Larry, The Edge began attending prayer group meetings in the late 1970s. The young men were in search of spirituality and the answer to the big questions, and consequently were torn between their Christian ideals and their rock and roll lifestyle. Larry and Bono quickly chose the band, but The Edge was uncertain to the point where he nearly left U2 during the October tour. But he took Bono's advice to follow his heart, and after a reasonable period of soul searching, he chose the band as well. The Edge soon realized he didn't have any trouble reconciling his beliefs with his music and lifestyle; it was other people who did. In his words: "there was no problem. It was other people's problems".

In 1983, Edge married Aislinn O'Sullivan, with whom he remained for seven years and had three daughters: Hollie (born 4th July 1984), Arran (born 15th October 1985), and Blue Angel (born 26th June 1989). They separated in 1990 and divorced in 1996. He now has a daughter, Sian (born 7th October 1997), and a son, Levi (born 1st October 1999), with Morleigh Steinberg, the belly dancer and choreographer from the Zoo TV Tour, whom he started dating in 1993. The two were married on 18th June, 2002.

Edge portrait

The Edge's unmistakable guitar sound -- clean, sharp, incisive, and cutting-Edge -- is part of U2's trademark. The characteristic and mesmerizing sounds and the emotions he expresses through them make him one of the most respected guitarists in rock and roll. He has often been called an "anti-guitar hero" because of his aversion to the indulgent, showy style based on intense soloing of many contemporaries, preferring instead to play in often a technically undemanding and low-key, yet original, way. He is renowned for being a guitarist who is more concerned with sounds, texture and innovation rather than flashy technique.

He's also lent his vocal talents to several U2 songs, first singing lead on "Seconds" from the War album. He later took the lead on songs such as "Van Diemen's Land" and "Numb", and sang a solo version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" during 1997-98's PopMart Tour. He also released a solo album, Captive, the soundtrack to the film of the same name, in 1986.

On the band's 2000 album, All That You Can't Leave Behind, Edge left behind the experimental electro and dance rhythms that he had explored on the previous three albums and returned to the more mainstream rock guitar sound similar to that of the band's earliest recordings. He continued this trend on 2004's How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, in keeping with U2's post-1990s ethos of stripping away all artifice from their music.

Although all the band members have long been individual supporters of organizations such as Greenpeace and Amnesty International, it wasn't until 2005 that The Edge became involved in public philanthropy. In response to the USA's Hurricane Katrina disaster which devastated New Orleans, Edge co-founded the charity Music Rising in November 2005 along with Bob Ezrin and Henry Juszkiewicz, with the aim of restoring the Gulf Coast's musical culture by replacing instruments that had been lost to the disaster. The organisation's aim was initially to provide replacement instruments solely to those professional musicians who had been affected by the storms. However, they now seek to provide instruments to affected churches and schools as well. This is all part of the charity's aim of "Rebuilding the Gulf Region note by note." Since then, The Edge has also publicly supported the organisations the New York Food Bank and Mencap Northern Ireland.

As a guitarist of astonishing versatility, The Edge continues, at all levels of his playing, to resist the rock n' roll clichés. His unconventional attitude to his craft is perhaps best summed up by his admission that "I suppose ultimately I'm interested in music. I'm a musician. I'm not a gunslinger. That's the difference between what I do and what a lot of guitar heroes do."

Adam Clayton

Adam Clayton
Born: March 13, 1960
Instrument: Bass Guitar
Born in Chinnor, Oxfordshire, England, Adam Clayton is the eldest son of Brian and Jo Clayton. The young Clayton family moved from England to Nairobi (due to Brian Clayton's profession as a pilot) before finally settling in Malahide, Ireland, when Adam was five years old. As luck would have it, the Claytons befriended the Evans family, and young Adam would occasionally play with Dave, his brother Dick and sister Gillian; however, the real bonding between two future members of U2 would not occur until after Larry Mullen posted his now famous advertisement at Mount Temple Comprehensive School.

Adam was sent to Castle Park, a British-styled boarding school in Dalkey, when he was eight years old. Not much of a sportsman, and discouraged from listening to pop music or watching television at school, Adam was miserable in his new surroundings and found solace in the Gramophone Society, which met twice a week to listen to classical music. This exposure to classical music encouraged him to try piano lessons, but that was soon abandoned because of lack of coordination and ambition, and a growing interest in the guitar.

Entering his teens, Adam moved to St. Columba's College, an Irish public boarding school in Whitechurch, where he befriended John Leslie, who could play guitar and had a cache of musical cassettes he happily shared. After realizing that Eric Clapton hadn't started playing guitar until he was 15 or so, Adam bought his first guitar, a second-hand acoustic, for £5, started learning songs, and took a few classical guitar lessons. Adam switched to the bass after deciding to start a group with John. After promising not to give up on the investment, his parents bought him his first bass – a dark brown Ibanez copy. The following year, Adam was kicked out of St. Columba's because of poor grades and sent to Mount Temple in north Dublin. Within a month of attending his first term, Adam was auditioning in Larry Mullen's kitchen.

Showing up in an afghan coat and sunglasses, Adam's entrance into the band had more to do with his sense of style and ownership of a bass guitar than anything else. The newly formed band, now called Feedback, practiced at school on Wednesday afternoons and landed their first gig at a talent show in the school gymnasium. Adam briefly took over the management of the band, making phone calls for gigs and sending fan messages to The Hype in the New Music Express, until Paul McGuinness was hired to manage the band full-time.

The lack of formal training did not hamper Adam's ability to make his instrument work for him and make his sonic presence known. Before the memorable bass lines in "Gloria" on October and "New Year's Day" on War helped launch U2 into the rock and roll stratosphere, Adam's contributions on the "11 O'Clock Tick Tock," single and "Twilight," "Out of Control" and "Stories for Boys" on Boy demonstrated he could not only set the rhythm and tone in a song, but he could do it with an unmistakable flair. The impressive display of range and emotion on "Where the Streets Have No Name," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," "With or Without You," and "Bullet the Blue Sky" on The Joshua Tree demonstrate his ability to expand beyond the traditional roll of rhythmic bass into something more melodic and at the forefront of the song, oftentimes creating riffs that rival The Edge's guitar.

In August 1989, Adam made headlines after two undercover cops busted him for possession of a small amount of marijuana in Dublin. To avoid conviction, the judge allowed Adam to make a "donation" of £25,000 to the Dublin Women's Aid Refugee Center. In U2 by U2, Adam described his conviction as a "minor offense that some individuals tried to blow up into something quite serious." At the time, Ireland was dealing with an expanding drug culture and the arrest was meant to send a message; however the story never got the traction authorities were looking for. Adam has since expressed regret over being caught breaking the law, but did not mind making a donation to the refugee center. Sadly, this was not to be the last time that he had to deal with substance abuse.

It was in the Zoo TV years that Adam seemed to finally gain a public persona along with the others. The "ultimate rock star" phase that the band explored was entirely suited to his playboy lifestyle, and Adam soaked it all up. He was frequently seen wearing loose, brightly colored clothes, sporting peroxide-blonde hair, constantly smoking cigarettes and wearing shades, and enjoying the company of supermodels. Most importantly, he had the talent to back it up – on songs like "Zoo Station," "Until the End of the World," "Mysterious Ways," "Tryin' to Throw Your Arms Around the World," "Babyface," "Lemon," and "Some Days Are Better Than Others," never had Adam shined so brightly.

However, toward the end of the tour, the unthinkable happened: Adam missed a gig. For the first time, U2 went on stage without one of its own. After staying away from alcohol during the final leg of the tour, Adam went on a wine binge and could not pull himself together in time for the concert. Emotions were already running high, as the first Sydney show was a test run to a live show that was going to air around the world. Canceling the show was not an option, and the decision was made to have Adam's guitar tech, Stuart Morgan, fill in for him. After the missed show, Adam admitted he had a problem and went sober then and there.

After the behemoth that was Zoo TV finally closed, Adam headed to New York City with Larry. He undertook bass lessons in an effort to expand his knowledge of the instrument. Pausing for various soundtrack-related projects -- including a UK Top 10 hit with "Theme From 'Mission: Impossible'" (a collaboration with Larry) -- Adam underwent something of a renaissance, and he emerged for the Pop sessions fresh and ready. His progressive contributions to the songs speak for themselves -- "MoFo," "Gone," "Miami" and "Please" feature the riffs of his career, inventive, complex and original.

The work Adam has produced in the years since Pop has demonstrated the comfort he has with his playing, and the comfort he feels in his own skin. His playing on "Elevation," "Beautiful Day" and "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" on All That You Can't Leave Behind and "Vertigo," "Miracle Drug" and "Love and Peace or Else" on How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb demonstrate his ability to give the song the support, strength, melody and rhythm it needs, but without overpowering it.

Adam has stated that he didn't feel destined for greatness before U2, and joining U2 was the "best decision" he ever made. It remains to be seen just how long the four lads from Dublin will continue to dominate the rock and roll landscape, but Adam is optimistic that as long as "people are able to make that commitment, then it's worth doing."

Bono

Paul David "Bono" Hewson
Born: May 10, 1960
Instrument: Vocals, guitar

As the lead singer of U2, one of the most popular and influential rock bands of the last 30 years, Bono is a figure adored and admired both within and outside of the music industry. As a rock star, his music with U2 has earned him legions of devoted fans across the world, whilst as a humanitarian and crusader for the world's poor, co-founder of organisations such as DATA and the ONE Campaign, he has gained deep respect from politicians and global statesmen as well as music fans. His rare ability to effectively straddle the spheres of both entertainment and politics remains rivaled by few in the realm of popular culture, and his determination to change the world for the better continues to inspire millions on both sides of the political divide.

It's perhaps unsurprising that Bono's unusual adult existence was preceded by a less-than-ordinary upbringing. Born in the north Dublin suburb of Ballymun, Paul Hewson was the second child of Catholic father Brendan Robert Hewson (always called Bobby), and Protestant mother Iris Elizabeth Rankin – a highly unusual arrangement in then deeply sectarian Ireland. As a child Paul Hewson was a precocious, outspoken and thoughtful boy whose early experiences did much to shape his later life as one of the most important figures in Irish history.

As a child, his education started at The Inkwell, a small Protestant Church of Ireland junior school, before eventually continuing on to St. Patrick's Cathedral Choir School. But his time there was unsuccessful; as Bono put it, "I spent a year at St. Patrick's, not being happy, and basically they asked me to leave." This was largely a result of the young Paul throwing dog feces at his Spanish teacher, which subsequently led to his enrollment in 1972 at Mount Temple Comprehensive School, a controversial establishment that was Ireland's first co-educational, non-denominational high school. Paul settled in very quickly and soon became well-adjusted and happy in his new environment.

But at the age of 14, he suffered a tragic and devastating loss when his mother died of a brain hemorrhage whilst attending the funeral of her own father.

From this point onwards, Paul's home life became considerably traumatic. Despite his father's attempts to hold the family together, Bono claims that he and Bob Hewson "didn't get on very well." As a result, father and son never enjoyed a particularly close relationship. In fact, Bono would later claim that the inarticulate Bob Hewson's unspoken message to his children was "to dream is to be disappointed." The singer has often cited this as a key reason for his forming such big ambitions and becoming even more determined to follow his dreams.

It was not long after his mother's death that Paul also got his new name. Originally 'Steinhegvanhuysenolegbangbangbang,' it evolved to 'Bonavox of O'Connell Street' after a hearing aid store in the centre of Dublin, before eventually being shortened to 'Bonavox,' 'Bono Vox' – cockeyed Latin for 'good voice' – and finally 'Bono.' Credit for this goes to his mate Guggi (real name Derek Rowan), a childhood friend, who along with Bono was a member of the group Lypton Village. This was a gang of disaffected-but-creative youths that included Gavin Friday (real name Fionan Hanvey), the man who would eventually go on to form the avant-garde rock band the Virgin Prunes. Bono has often cited Lypton Village as a key source of inspiration and support both before and during his time with U2.

At Mount Temple, Bono describes himself as being "a bit wide-awake, a bit bright, a bit experimental." Although he was far from exceptional as a student, he had a flair for history and art, and became a keen and expert chess player. However, he was perhaps the most adept at navigating the field of romance, entertaining many girlfriends. In 1976, he started dating Alison Stewart (b. March 23, 1961), commonly known as Ali, with the two eventually marrying on August 21, 1982. They went on to have four children: Jordan (b. May 10, 1989), Memphis Eve (b. July 7, 1991), Elijah Bob Patricius Guggi Q (b. August 17, 1999), and John Abraham (b. May 20, 2001). To this day, the family continues to make their home in Dublin.

Despite his initial ambition to be an actor, it was arguably Bono's tendency to be, in his own words, "promiscuous with my ambitions, flirting with all kinds of things" which led him to respond to a notice posted on the Mount Temple bulletin board appealing for musicians. Those interested were told to assemble at 60 Rosemount Avenue, Artane, the house of 14-year-old drummer Larry Mullen Jnr.

As well as Bono, the other boys who made it to that first session were 15-year-old guitarist David Evans (later nicknamed The Edge), 16-year-old Adam Clayton, who couldn't actually play bass guitar but certainly knew how to talk as though he did, Larry's friend Peter Martin, Ivan McCormick, and David Evans' brother Dick. Ivan and Peter were, to quote Adam, "weeded out" early on, whilst Dick eventually left the band to study engineering at Trinity College Dublin. The four remaining boys were initially named Feedback (supposedly after the ear-splitting wailing that always seemed to emanate from the guitar amps), before becoming the Hype, and then eventually U2.

Shortly after the band's formation, Bono, Edge and Larry became involved in the Dublin-based Christian group Shalom. From an early age, the controversy caused by the marriage between his Protestant mother and Catholic father had made Bono extremely suspicious of organised religion, with him later describing it as having "cut my people in two." Therefore, the non-denominational nature of the Shalom group provided Bono and the two other believing members of U2 with solace, harmony and strength.

However, Bono, Edge and Larry's involvement with Shalom later caused friction within U2, as the non-believing Adam felt that the latter three's more devout friends were trying to make them prioritise their faith over the band. The three believers did eventually leave Shalom, as they felt that the group was trying to force upon them the false assertion that a commitment to rock n' roll and a commitment to God were mutually excludable principles. Since then, Bono's Christian faith has played a big role in his life, but in a way that has largely been free from the influence of the mainstream church.

Day Three of u and me

Warning this is a long post

"40"

Psalm 40, though Bono has mentioned in his intro to the book of Psalms that "How long (to sing this song)" was copped from Psalm 6.

"Pride"

"One man betrayed with a kiss" -- "Jesus said to him, 'Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?'"

"One man washed on an empty beach" -- Possibly a reference to Jonah 2:10: "Then the LORD ordered the fish to spit up Jonah on the beach, and it did." (Thanks to Brian)

"One man come he to justify" is from Isaiah 53:11, probably the best- known Old Testament prophecy describing the purpose of Jesus' coming: "my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities." "Justify" is a key verb in Christian theology referring to how the grace of Jesus makes believers right with God. (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"The Unforgettable Fire"

"And if the mountains should crumble or disappear into the sea..." Psalm 46:2: "Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea."

"A dry and waterless place" -- Deut 8:15 "He led you through the vast and dreadful desert, that dry and waterless land." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Where the Streets Have No Name"

"We're beaten and blown by the wind" -- James 1:6: "But he should ask in faith, not doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed about by the wind."

Although I'm sure there are several layers of meaning to this image, I cannot imagine someone who knows the Bible as well as Bono describing an ideal place in terms of "streets" without thinking of the description of the great street in the kingdom of Heaven -- Revelation 22:1 "Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city." And 22:21 "The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"

"I have spoken with the tongue of angels" -- 1 Corinthians 13:1: "If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal."

"With or Without You"

"See the thorn twist in your side" -- 2 Corinthians 12:7: "To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me."

"Bullet the Blue Sky"

"Jacob wrestled the angel/And the angel was overcome" -- Genesis 32:25: "Jacob was left there alone. Then some man wrestled with him until the break of dawn."

"Running To Stand Still"

"Sweet the sin, Bitter the taste in my mouth" -- Rev 10:10 "And I took the little book out of the angel's hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"In God's Country"

"Hope, faith, her vanity/The greatest gift is gold" -- an ironic take (who says U2 didn't discover irony until Achtung Baby?) on 1 Corinthians 13:13: "So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love." (Thanks to Mateo)

"I stand with the sons of Cain" --In Genesis 4 Cain kills his brother and is marked forever by God and sent away as a murderer, thus experiencing the scary aspect of coming into contact with the divine ("burned by the fire of love.") In exile Cain has sons: one of the sons of Cain, Jubal, is traditionally considered the ancestor of musicians. "He was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Trip Through Your Wires"

"I was cold and you clothed me honey..." -- Matthew 25:35-36: "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me..."

"One Tree Hill"

"You know his blood still cries from the ground" -- Genesis 4:10 -- "[The murder of Abel by Cain] The LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground."

"I'll see you again when the stars fall from the sky..." -- see note on "Fire."

"We run like a river to the sea" -- Ecclesiastes 1:7: "All rivers go to the sea, yet never does the sea become full. To the place where they go, the rivers keep on going."

"Exit"

"Saw the hands that build can also pull down" -- Jer 1:10 "See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant." And Jer 31:28 "Just as I watched over them to uproot and tear down, and to overthrow, destroy and bring disaster, so I will watch over them to build and to plant," declares the LORD." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Hawkmoon 269"

"Like tongues of flame" -- Acts 2:3: "[The apostles receive the Holy Spirit] Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each of them."

"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" (Rattle and Hum version)

"He'll be your shelter from the storm" -- Psalm 55:8: "I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm." (another stretch)

"Silver and Gold"

This obviously has a literal meaning in the song, but it is also a very frequently used phrase in the Bible and it has some positive and some negative meanings. Among the ones that fit the song most are: Deut 29:17 You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold. Ps 133:15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. Zeph 1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the LORD's wrath. (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Love Rescue Me"

"Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow/Yet I will fear no evil/I have cursed they rod and staff/They no longer comfort me..." -- Psalm 23 -- "Even though I walk in the dark valley I fear no evil; for you are at my side with your rod and your staff that give me courage."

"When Love Comes to Town"

"I was there when they crucified my Lord/I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword/I threw the dice when they pierced his side..." -- Matthew 27:35: "After they had crucified him, they divided his garments by casting lots."

"The Fly"

"Love we shine like a burning star/We're falling from the sky tonight" -- Luke 10:18: "Jesus said to them, 'I saw Satan fall from the sky like lightning.'" (See also "Slide Away.")

"Until the End of the World"

"We ate the food, we drank the wine...I took the money, I spiked your drink...In the garden I was playing the tart, I kissed your lips and broke your heart" -- see Judas and Jesus in Matthew 14-15, 20-29, 47-49

"Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses"

"Well you left my heart empty as a vacant lot/for any spirit to haunt" -- Luke 11:24-26:"When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"So Cruel"

"Between the horses of love and lust we are trampled underfoot" -- 2 Kings 9:33 (The death of Jezebel): "' Throw her down!' Jehu said. So they threw her down, and some of her blood spattered the wall and the horses as they trampled her underfoot."

"Mysterious Ways"

Tarheel Tim's taken care of this one by pointing out elements of the song (the moon, Johnny, living underground, running away from what you don't understand, belly dancing, even the title phrase) that are also in Oscar Wilde's play "Salome." The Biblical story of Salome can be found in Mark 6: 17-29.

"Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around the World"

"He took an open top Beetle/through the eye of a needle" -- Luke 18:24-25 -- "Jesus looked at him now sad and said, 'How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God."

"Alex Descends Into Hell..."

"Dies irae, dies illa/Dies irae, dies illa Tuba mirum spargens sonum {on the day of wrath, that day, the trumpet's wondrous call}" -- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed."

(From the Requiem Mass) "Dies irae/dies illa/Tuba mirum/Spargens sonum (That day of wrath/That day/The trumpet's wondrous call/Sounding abroad)" --1 Corinthians 15:52: "...in an instant, in the blink of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."

(Note: the last line "Descendit in Inferno" is not part of the Dies Irae, but the Creed: "He descended into Hell")

"Salome"

The song, like Oscar Wilde's play "Salome," is taken from the story of the death of John the Baptist; see Mark 6:17-29.

"Give you half what I got if you untie the knot, it's a promise" -- Mark 6:22-23: "Herodias' own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, 'Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.' He even swore [many things] to her, 'I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom.'" [Note: I just now noticed that the name "Salome" is never mentioned in these accounts, just as it is never mentioned that the dance she performs is the dance of the seven veils. But this account grew into a medieval legend, and perhaps the extra details came into the story then.]

"Baby I feel sick, don't make me stick to a promise" -- Mark 6:25-26: "The girl hurried back to the king's presence and made her request, 'I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.' The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her."

"Lemon"

"And when you're dry/She draws her water from the stone" -- Numbers 20:8: "[God said to Moses] 'Take this staff and assemble thee community, you and your brother Aaron, and in their presence order the rock to yield its waters. From the rock you shall bring forth water for the community and their livestock to drink.'"

"Stay (Faraway, So Close!)"

"Stay with the demons you drowned" -- Matthew 9:31-32: "The demons pleaded with [Jesus], 'If you drive us out, send us into the herd of swine.' And he said to them, 'Go then!' They came out and entered the swine, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea where they drowned."

"The First Time"

"Gave me the keys to his kingdom coming" -- Matthew 16:19: "[Jesus said to Peter] 'I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.'"

"He said 'I have many mansions/And there are many rooms to see' " -- John 14:2: "In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you."

"The Wanderer"

"Through streets paved with gold" -- Revelation 21:21: "The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass."

"Who would sit at his Father's right hand" -- Matthew 26:64: "'Yes, it is as you say,' Jesus replied. 'But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.'"

Another possible title for this song, according to an interview with Bono in the book Race of Angels, was "The Preacher." Though no lines correspond exactly, the spirit of the song echoes the entire book of Ecclesiastes (also sometimes called "The Preacher"). For instance: "I went out there in search of experience/to taste and to touch and to feel as much as a man can before he repents" and Ecclesiastes 11:9: "Rejoice, O young man, while you are young, and let your heart be glad in the days of your youth. Follow the ways of your heart, the vision of your eyes; yet understand as regards all this God will bring you to judgment."

"Elvis Ate America"

"reading Corinthians 13" -- That's the "Love is patient, love is kind" chapter that is so popular at weddings.

"If God Will Send His Angels"

"It's the blind leading the blond" -- Matthew 15:14: "Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit."

"So where is the hope, and where is the faith, and the love?" -- 1 Corinthians 13:13. (Thanks to Mateo)

"The Playboy Mansion"

"Then there will be no time of sorrow, then there will be no time for pain" -- Revelation 21:4: "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."

"Please"

"Your sermon on the mount" -- Matthew 5:1-12 or Luke 6:20-26

"Wake Up Dead Man"

"your Father, He made the world in seven" -- Genesis 1:1-2:4

"Wake up, wake up dead man" -- possibly Ephesians 5:14: "...for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: 'Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.'" (Thanks to Nanette)

"Slide Away" (by Michael Hutchence)

"But you tore a hole in space like a dark star falls from grace" -- Luke 10:18: "Jesus said, 'I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky.'" ('Lucifer' is the name once given to Venus, the morning star; in "At the End of the World" Flanagan mentions Bono wanting to put the line "I was a child to your dark star" into "You Made Me the Thief of Your Heart.")

"Falling At Your Feet"

"Every knee not ready to bend" -- Philippians 2:9-10: "...God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth."

"Not my will, Thy will" --Matthew 26:39: Jesus' prayer in the garden of Gethsemane -- "He advanced a little and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, 'My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.'"

"Beautiful Day"

"The heart is a bloom/shoots up through the stony ground" -- Isaiah 52:3: "He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground." (submitted by Andrew)

"See the bird with the leaf in her mouth" -- Genesis 8:10-11: "[Noah] waited seven days more and again sent the dove out from the ark. In the evening the dove came back to him, and there in its bill was a plucked-off olive leaf! So Noah knew that the waters had lessened on the earth."

"After the flood all the colours came out" -- Genesis 9:12-13: "God added: 'This is the sign that I am giving for all ages to come, of the covenant between me and you and every living creature with you: I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.'"

"Stuck In A Moment..."

"I am not afraid of anything in this world" -- Luke 12:4: "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more."

"Walk On"

"A place that has to be believed to be seen" -- John 11:40 Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Home - I can't say where it is, but I know I'm going" -- John 14: 4-6 Jesus said, "You know the way to the place where I am going." Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" Jesus answered, "I am the way." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"In A Little While"

"In a little while, I won't be blown by every breeze..." -- Ephesians 4:14 Then, we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of doctrine. (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Wild Honey"

"You were my shelter and my shade" -- Isaiah 25:4 "You have been... a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Grace"

"She carries a pearl in perfect condition" -- Matt 13:45-46 "The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"What left a mark no longer stains" -- Not a quote, but a pretty clear allusion to Isaiah 1:18 "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Always"

"Put your head over the parapet" -- Matthew 4:5-6: From the temptation of Jesus--"Then the devil took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, 'If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: "He will command his angels concerning you" and "with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone."'"

(Now this one has an unusual history. The first time I heard Bono talking about "putting one's head over the parapet" was in an interview about the Million Dollar Hotel. He was talking about the necessity for rock musicians to take risks that would leave them vulnerable. It was only because this was in the context of a movie about a man jumping from a roof that it was clear he was referencing this verse -- that and the fact the word "parapet" doesn't show up that often in the Bible.)

"Vertigo"

"All of this can be yours/just give me what I want/and no one gets hurt" -- the temptation by Jesus in the desert by Satan, specifically what the Devil tells him in Luke 4:7: "So if you worship me, it will all be yours." (submitted first by Alain and thereafter by many, many others)

"Miracle Drug"

"I was a stranger/you took me in" -- Matthew 25:34-35: "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in..." ("and ye took me in" in the King James Version) (submitted first by Robin)

"Love and Peace or Else"

"Lay down your treasure" -- Matthew 6:19-21: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (submitted by Robin)

Also would like to point out (per Rev. Beth) that contrary to the lyric booklet, the line is quite likely to be "you don't have time/before a jealous lover," in which case any number of variations on the phrase "The Lord your God is a jealous God" could be linked.

"City of Blinding Lights"

"Blessings are not just for the ones who kneel/luckily" -- Matthew 5:44-45: "But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous."

"All Because of You"

"All because of you/I am" -- A few folks have found it interesting that the same album that has a song called "Yahweh" has a song with a close English translation of the Hebrew name of God-see Exodus 3:13-14: "'But,' said Moses to God, 'when I go to the Israelites and say to them, "The God of your fathers has sent me to you," if they ask me, "What is his name?" what am I to tell them?' God replied, 'I am who I am.' Then he added, 'This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you.'"

"Crumbs From Your Table"

"I would believe if I was able/I'm waiting on the crumbs from your table" -- Matthew 15:21-27: Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession." Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs." "Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."

"Yahweh"

The title is the name of God given in the passage quoted for "All Because of You," "I am who I am."

"A city should be shining on a hill" -- Matthew 5:14: "You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid." (submitted by Robin)

"Fast Cars"

"My garden's overgrown/I go out on my belly crawling" -- allusion to the serpent in the story of the Fall and the curse given the serpent in Genesis 3:14: "Then the Lord God said to the serpent: "Because you have done this, you shall be banned from all the animals and from all the wild creatures; on your belly shall you crawl, and dirt shall you eat all the days of your life."

Day two from U2 - Thoughts round mind and soul

"With a Shout"

"With a shout" -- Psalm 47:5 "God has gone up with a shout, the LORD with the sound of a trumpet." Also I think there is an overall reference to the Psalms of Ascent, which were chanted by pilgrims on the way up the hill to Jerusalem, e.g. Psalm 122 "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD. Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"I Threw a Brick Through a Window"

"No one is blinder than he who will not see" -- John 9:40-41 "And some of the Pharisees who were with Jesus heard these words, and said to him, Are we blind also? Jesus said to them, If you were blind, you would have no sin: but now that you claim to see, your sin remains." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Stranger In a Strange Land"

The entire song makes allusion to the Emmaus story from Luke 24, where the risen Jesus appears as a stranger, but miraculously cannot be recognized until he offers bread to the two disciples who have invited him in. The song paraphrases their exclamation when they realize who they have been with -- "They asked each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?" ("I watched as he watched us. The way it was when he was with us") Though it is late night, they don't go to sleep but instead walk 9 miles back to Jerusalem to tell the others what they saw. ("They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, 'It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.' Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.") This parallels: "But I couldn't sleep after what I saw: I wrote this letter to tell you the way I feel. I wish you were here to see what I could see." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Sunday Bloody Sunday"

"Trenches dug within our hearts, And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart" -- Matthew 10:35: "For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."

"Wipe the tears from your eyes" -- Revelation 21:4: "He will wipe every tear from their eyes..."

"We eat and drink while tomorrow they die" A brilliant ironic take on I Cor 15:32 "If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die." The "how long" cry is too frequent in the Bible to cover in full, but here are some prominent examples:

Ps 6:3 "My soul is in anguish. How long, O LORD, how long?" (This is the same line Bono says he used in "40," too.)

Ps 94:3 "How long will the wicked, O LORD, how long will the wicked be jubilant?"

Habakkuk 1:2 "How long, O LORD, must I call for help, but you do not listen? Or cry out to you, "Violence!" but you do not save?" (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Seconds"

"Like a thief in the night" -- 1 Thessalonians 5:2: "for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night."

"Like a Song"

"A new heart is what I need/Oh God, make it bleed" -- Ezekiel 36:26: "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh."

"Drowning Man"

"Rise up, rise up/With wings like eagles/You'll run, you'll run/You'll run and not grow weary" -- Isaiah 40:31: "but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

"Two Hearts Beat As One"

"Say I'm a fool; You say I'm nothing; But if I'm a fool for you, Oh, that's something" I Cor 3:18 If any one among you seems to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. I Cor 4:10 We are fools for Christ's sake. (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Surrender"

"If I wanna live I gotta die to myself someday" -- Luke 9:24-25: "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world yet lose or forfeit himself?"

Next Three Days of References from the good book

"I Will Follow"

"If you walk away walk away I will follow" -- Ruth 1:16: "But Ruth said, "Entreat me not to leave you or to return from following you; for where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God."

"A Celebration"

"I believe in the walls of Jericho/I believe they're coming down" -- Joshua 6:20: "When the trumpets sounded, the people shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the people gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so every man charged straight in, and they took the city."

"Gloria"

"In te domine...exultate...miserere" -- The first words in Latin of three Psalms--30 (31): "In Thee O Lord do I put my trust...", 32 (33): "Rejoice in the Lord, ye righteous..." and 50 (51): "Have mercy on me, O God." "O Lord, loosen my lips"--Psalm 50 (51): "O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise."

"Only in you I'm complete" -- Colossians 2:10 "For in {Christ} dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. And in him you are complete." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"Fire"

"The sun is burning black ... the moon is running red ... the stars are falling down" -- from Revelation 6, 12-13: "Then I watched while he broke open the sixth seal, and there was a great earthquake; the sun turned as black as dark sackcloth and the whole moon became like blood. The stars in the sky fell to the earth like unripe figs shaken loose from the tree in a strong wind."

"Tomorrow"

"Who tore the curtain? Who was it for?" -- Matthew 27:51: [The Crucifixion] "At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split."

The door imagery and "open up to the Lamb of God" is from Rev 3:20 when Jesus says: "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will eat with him, and he with me." (submitted by Rev. Beth)

"October"

"And kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall" -- this one may be a bit of a stretch, but Psalm 46:6: "Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts."

Songs of Ascent - Next up

ince the news broke a few weeks ago that Songs of Ascent is the next U2 album — due out (probably) in 2010 – several bloggers have started to unpack the title and wonder what’s in store for us listeners. So what I’m writing about here isn’t breaking news.

While trying to not get too ahead of ourselves as we anticipate the songs we haven’t heard, we could prepare our future powers of reception. There are a few things I think the band would like us to know. Three!

One: If it’s not already in you, get some jazz in ya’. Bono cited Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue and John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme as points of reference for where they are aiming with this next album.

Hold the Dance Moves and watch

Bono called in from Fez on Friday morning to chat with 2FM's Gerry Ryan about the U2360 Tour. He talked about why U2 doesn't just play random songs ("When you leave the concert, we want you to feel like you've been through something."), said the band hasn't tried to perform "Moment of Surrender" live yet, and they haven't figured out the setlist at this early date. But we hope he's serious about the promise in the headline: "It's not gonna be too choreographed." :-) (Thx Cathal et al)

Wake up to Boston Pre-Sales

2 has added two new shows in Europe this summer, and announced the first pre-sale dates for North America. Here's the scoop:

New shows are confirmed for Paris (July 12) and London (August 15).

U2.com pre-sales for Chicago, Toronto, Boston, and New York will all run from 10 am on Tuesday (March 24) to 12 pm on Thursday (March 26). The public on-sale for Chicago will begin March 30th.

NOTE: For Boston and Chicago, the pre-sale isn't just for U2.com subscribers it seems. Season ticket holders for the New England Patriots and Chicago Bears have also been given access to the pre-sale starting on March 24. It does appear that "Horizon" subscribers to U2.com will have a two hour jump start on the pre-sale before the Patriots' and Bears' season ticket holders.

Sales Down, Still at #1

John Williams

It was a bittersweet win for U2 on the Canadian album charts this week.

The Irish rockers captured the top spot once again, despite seeing sales of their latest effort No Line on the Horizon drop by 67 percent.

U2's numbers reached just over 21,000, down from the 65,000 they sold last week, according to data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan.

Their entry last week achieved the best first-week sales this year to date.

Two new entries challenged U2, but ultimately fell short -- Kelly Clarkson's All I Ever Wanted came in at No. 2 with 14,000 in sales, and Johnny Reid's Dance With Me premiered at No. 3 on sales of 13,000.

The new debuts sent Lady GaGa's The Fame, Nickelback's Dark Horse, and Jason Mraz's We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things all down two positions to No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6, respectively.

Rounding out the top 10 was Kings of Leon's Only by the Night at No. 7, Mario Pelchat and Michel Legrand's self-titled disc at No. 8, Dede's A Travers Les Brumes at No. 9, and Taylor Swift's Fearless at No. 10.

In the U.S., Kelly Clarkson debuted in first, followed by The-Dream's Love vs. Money came in second, U2 in third, the J. Holiday's Round 2 in fourth, and Taylor Swift in fifth.

Long-time U2 Show Director Willie Williams has worked again with architect Mark Fisher (ZooTV, PopMart, Elevation and Vertigo), to create an innovative 360° design which affords an unobstructed view for the audience. U2 360° also marks the first time a band has toured in stadiums with such a unique and original structure.

Summerville was fun

But even shrunk down to the cozy Somerville Theatre for the final gig on its three-city "secret show" promotional blitz, the quartet exuded its signature widescreen, "greatest band in the land" charm and swagger. For an audience of 800 or so ecstatic fans, and those tuned in around the world via radio simulcast, the Irish rockers spent 60 minutes powering through a handful of tracks with stadium-size energy and gamely fielding audience questions with poise and good humor.

The performance portion blasted off with the fuzzy clangor of "Get on Your Boots." Bono urged folks to hop out of their seats and crowd the area in front of the stage and they didn't need to be told twice, deliriously jamming into any space not occupied by video equipment. (The show was taped for future use).

The "Horizon" songs may have not seeped in for fans yet but the band made a forceful case for their quality in the bass thrum and keening uplift of "Magnificent," the muscularity of "Breathe," and Bono's falsetto flights and the Edge's chiming guitar on "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight." The mini-set ended with a kinetic "Vertigo" with plenty of help from the crowd on vocals.

Five minutes later the band members returned to sit in director's chairs and field audience questions read by Sway.

The queries covered everything from what song Bono wished he'd written - Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," a chorus of which he sang - to memorable fan encounters. Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. recalled a show at the Paradise in Boston when a female fan tried to handcuff herself to Bono's leg. "That's how I met the missus," the singer quipped.

One of the night's treats was hearing from less-quoted members like Mullen and bassist Adam Clayton. Mullen in particular thoughtfully responded to a question about advice for aspiring bands. He spoke of good songs and even better arguments but stressed democracy "where everybody feels a stake in what they do. The idea of hired hands in bands just doesn't work, it's about respect for the individual."

During station breaks the band bantered with the audience, Bono sent a shout out to Senator Ted Kennedy, and got everyone to sing "Happy Birthday" to Clayton.

Bono brought the night to a gracious close by verbally throwing his arms around the audience, saying "Thank you for the great life you've given us."

A chant of "one more song," which rose immediately and went on for a few minutes, sadly went unrewarded but the buzz of having seen something special lingered in the departing crowd.

Bono and Co wrap up a week - What week it was

Bono and Co. played the intimate, one-time vaudeville theater like it was an arena, tearing through five incendiary tunes in just 20 minutes. Backlit by strands of bright white lightbulbs against a naked brick wall, Bono stomped and strutted during "Get on Your Boots," tossing dual, syncopated peace signs to the crowd.

And when he crooned, "I was born to sing for you," in "Magnificent," and the 900-strong audience of radio contest winners and über-fans cheered wildly, it was clear that Bono's lyrics and The Edge's shimmering arpeggiation are writ large for a reason. Likewise, on "Breathe" and "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" the audience fed the frontman his every word.

Still, even as bassist Adam Clayton leaned into the crowd with a smile, the band's rapture wasn't enough for Bono. He lunged and leapt at the opening strains of "Vertigo," pumping his fists like a boxer, muttering, "C'mon!" under his breath while taunting the fans to get out of their heads.

"Gimme what I want," he sang, "and no one gets hurt!"

After a quick break, the band returned to the stage for a lively, mostly hilarious Q&A moderated by Sway. Of their David Letterman-inspired beef with Sting, The Edge said, "I love Sting; he's everything anyone wants to be in a band. He's good-looking. And he plays really complicated bass parts while singing. Sting's only problem is he's too cool to be cool."

When asked when he lost his virginity, Bono answered slyly, "Times like this, I'm inclined to think of Madonna and tell you that I feel like a virgin touched for the very first time."

And when asked how the band knows when an album is done, The Edge joked, "They're never done, they're just released."

"We treat every album like it's our first one," Bono told Sway afterward. "So getting to meet our people again is a real thrill — just to find out they're still there!"

Even the typically reserved Larry Mullen Jr. was giddy as he eyed his salutary Guinness.

"In the early days [of] playing clubs, we always wanted to move onto the next place because we thought that the music should be in bigger," he said. "But it's just that we weren't very good back then. We really enjoyed tonight's show 'cause we were rehearsed! So we may go back to the clubs permanently."

"Though it's nice not to have to," Bono cracked.
