Inspired by U2, Bono and or God ?

Saturday Afternoon, listening to some music a mix of U2 and well the 80’s and of course a mix in of current music. I began to think about how U2 has sifted through various images of religion, what does that mean to you and me? Our team posted the question this week. “U2 Music inspires you to do what? Give us some ideas. What does U2 music mean to you?” Inspired by U2 or is it inspired by Bono? At this point the lines are blurred, Bono is the ultimate front man, and yea we heard that Laim was voted the best front man in the latest issue of RS.

Maybe its religion that inspires you, maybe the thought that you are part of something greater and that you have someone watching out over you could that be inspiring?  It’s not any big secret. Bono, the Edge, and Larry Mullen Jr. had their own Bible study group in the pre-U2 days. Their second album, October, is loaded with Christian images, and during its recording, critics hailed U2 as a Christian band, something that U2 has always denied. Bono got to hang out with Pope John Paul II before his passing in 2005. They’re just a rock & roll band, right?

Interesting if you label them a Christian rock band you have people from the right screaming how you can even think of them in such a fashion however a few churches are turning to U2. USA Today reports that the U2 Eucharist is a “traditional Episcopal liturgy” that refers to some of U2’s best-selling songs such as “Beautiful Day” and “Pride (In the Name of Love)” as hymns. We shared stories about this concept before it involves combining U2 songs with related religious montages. Reverend Paige Blair, a parish priest in York Harbor, Maine, incorporated some of U2’s lyrics during a sermon in July 2005. Since then, she’s gone on to assist 150 churches with their own U2 Eucharists, and the idea are spreading like wildfire across 15 states and seven countries. They’re not worshipping Bono, but choosing to use him and the band’s work as an example of spreading the word.

I thought about the question myself this week and as the editor of U2TOURFANS I wondered if I should share my personal thoughts. The team all agreed that I should at least share something with you the reader.

So here goes. “Well the God I believe in isn’t short o’ cash, MISTER!!” Think about that line for second, Churches all around the world ask you for a donation. Ask you to put faith in…. Fill in the blank.

I put my faith in God, Inspired ? Sure I am inspired daily by lots of images, music, and words. I can say that U2 has created a place for me to express and share my views with like minded people.

The bottom line; you don’t have to like my views, agree or believe however you should respect one another. It’s really that simple.

U2’s music is a vessel to which we all could use to take a ride on. Bono has been blessed by theBono/ U2 360 Tour 2009 hand of God, he once said  “I just go where the life is, you know? Where I feel the Holy Spirit,” Bono told Christianity Today. “If it’s in the back of a Roman Catholic cathedral, in the quietness and the incense, which suggest the mystery of God, of God’s presence, or in the bright lights of the revival tent, I just go where I find life.

I don’t see denomination. I generally think religion gets in the way of God.

“I am just trying to figure it out. Everybody wants to make an impact with their life, whether it’s small scale with friends or family—that’s really big, is the truth—or whether it’s on a grand scale, in changing their communities and beyond.

I just want to realize my potential.” He recalled one pastor’s recent advice: Stop asking God to bless what you’re doing. Find out what God’s doing. It’s already blessed. “That’s what I want,” Bono said. “I want to align my life with that.”

What do you want to align your life to? Post your comments.

U2 Manager Hails Irish Court Decision

Editor Comment: Normally its better to stay away from commenting on items like this one. However just to be clear what the high court decision did not reference “Bootleg” concerts. Which we think that most U2 fans have atleast one concert that they would share - Remember the keyword here is share. NOT Sell. Wethink the best place to share U2 music wold have to be U2START.com.

The High Court has cleared the way for the Irish Recorded Music Association and Eircom to implement their graduated response to illegal filesharing, which was agreed in February 2009 but held up by a legal objection.

Agreeing with IRMA’s assertion that “an IP address refers solely to the network address of a computer and is not personal data when in IRMA’s possession”, Mr. Justice Charleton said in his ruling: “The right to be identified with and to reasonably exploit one’s own original creative endeavour I regard as a human right. It is completely within the legitimate standing of Eircom to act, and to be seen to act, as a body, which upholds the law and Constitution. That is what the Court expects of both individuals and companies.

“The internet is only a means of communication,” Justice Charleton continued. “It has not rewritten the legal rules of each nation through which it passes. It is not an amorphous extraterrestrial body with an entitlement to norms that run counter to the fundamental principles of human rights. There is nothing in the criminal or civil law which legalises that which is otherwise illegal simply because the transaction takes place over the internet.”

One of the first people to react to the ruling is U2 manager Paul McGuinness who comments: “This is a landmark decision. The judge’s emphatic and eloquent words will be reported around the world, and be welcomed by musicians, composers, filmmakers and actors everywhere.”

Echoing those sentiments, IRMA Chairman Willie Kavanagh adds: “The whole music industry, including performers, composers and record labels, has been decimated by illegal peer to peer traffic and our losses amount to over €60m per annum. Our industry has lost 40% in sales value between 2005 and 2009 with devastating effects on Artists and creativity. Today’s decision is the first step back towards allowing Artists to make a living again.”

OneRepublic Are 'Freaked Out' By U2

“I have a Bono rash”

If you’re a hitmaking machine like OneRepublic, you generally don’t agree to open for anyone. But when two of the biggest acts in the business extend offers to serve as curtain-jerkers, you have to at least think twice. And say yes, apparently.

Because this summer, OneRepublic will open for both Bon Jovi and U2, and one of those gigs will see them perform with Jon Bon at the brand-new Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey, a slot akin to opening for the Pope at the Vatican. ( See our story if Bono was the POPE)

“We just got asked to open up the first musical performance at the new Meadowlands Stadium, in New Jersey … so that’s going to be crazy,” OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder laughed. “Something like 70-80,000 New Jerseyans, opening up for Bon Jovi in his home state. So we have to do something special for that. I’m not sure just what, but it’ll be something. Maybe we’ll work a Bruce Springsteen cover into the set.”

And since they’ve agreed to two high-profile tours, the guys in OneRepublic know they have to step up their game. A Boss cover just isn’t going to cut it.

“The U2 stuff, I mean, that’s kind of why we started a band. … I’m still kind of freaked out about it. And I’m not a guy who takes a bunch of pictures and video, but I’m going to be filming the whole thing. [We’ll be like] one of those idiots, backstage, Twittering our rosy little fingers off,” he laughed. “For all those kids out there, it’s kind of like how you feel about Bieber. Bono is Bieber to us. I have a little bit of Bieber fever too, but not as much as Bono fever. I have a full-on rash. A Bono-sized rash.”

2010 World Cup as ESPN picks U2 for promos

As we reported before U2 has been choosen for the world cup commericals. Whats interesting not that the boys where choosen, the songs selected. Its the fact the the Irish will not be going to the world cup.  Karma ? Who knows, Henry ( player) did not do his part to insure the team a spot this time around.

U2 has ads are already on the air and the ads which will run through the World Cup itself will feature footage from U2’s Pasadena concert. We have posted a couple of them.

The five songs are:
“Where the Streets Have No Name” (with the Soweto Gospel Choir)
“Magnificent”).
“Out of Control” - weyhey! You rarely hear this song on the radio anymore
“Desire”
“City of Blinding Lights.”

What if Bono was the POPE

This one we could not even make up. It comes from our friends at the Irlish Central - Amy Andrews the gossip girl to the Irlish paper come up with this wonderful thought of POP Bono.

POPE BONO Ways the world would be different if Bono were Pope

10. Goofy pointed hat would be replaced by a cool Army fatigue
9. Sermons would have a 14-swear maximum
8. “Hold me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me” would be added to the Catholic hymnal
7. Popemobile would be replaced by a bulletproof tour bus.
6. Instead of the normal benediction, services would close with “And on drums, Larry Mullens. Good night Cleveland.”
5. Communion wine would be replaced by pints of Guinness stout
4. Catholic Church would be in charge of canonization of saints as well as inductees into the Rock-And-Roll Hall of Fame
3. Donations to the church would be handled by Ticketmaster
2. In an interview in Rolling Stone, Bono would confess “I am not infallible. But I would like master that turning water into wine thing.”
1. Easter service would be three hours long with two encores

Humm now that sounds like a pretty solid deal to us. I say lets make it happen.

More Cash: Bono looks set to make a mint from the sale of troubled smart phone maker Palm.

Bono’s private equity company Elevation Partners is a major investor in the company currently seeking buyers. In December 2008, Elevation bought $100 million (£64.8 million) of Palm shares at $3.24 (£2.10) a pop to take its stake up to 41 per cent. These investments jumped up 32 percent in value last week to $5.16 (£3.34) a share.

Palm originally made PDA devices and recently launched the Pre and Pixi smartphones, as rivals to the iPhone. While the handsets received critical acclaim, sales have failed to match expectations. Palm has posted losses for the last 11 financial quarters, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Elevation bought a 25 percent stake in the firm in 2007 and helped install Jonathan Rubinstein, former head of Apple’s iPhone division, as chairman. The Irish rock star joined the US-based company shortly after its creation in 2004, when it was named after the U2 song.

While Bono is more associated with causes such as AIDS and debt relief, Elevation specialises in new media and entertainment with $1.9 billion (£1.23 billion) of assets under its control, the Telegraph reported. Last month, online publication 24/7 Wall Street called him the “worst investor in America” due to Elevation’s “unprecedented strong of disastrous investments.”

U2 The early years

With 12 studio albums under their belts, it’s hard to imagine U2’s humble beginnings – or even the lead singer Bono without his trademark sunglasses on.

A new exhibition, U2: The Early Years, by photographer Colm Henry, captures the band before they were even signed.

The photographer met them in 1979, at one of their first gigs at Dublin’s Baggot Inn. “They were one of about 600 bands around Ireland at that time and there was high unemployment. Everyone felt that someone had to make it and it turned out to be U2,” recalls Henry, who worked for Irish music magazine Hot Press.

U2, who are headlining Glastonbury this summer, are shown in a new light, long before they became megastars.

Having formed in Dublin in 1976 as teenagers at school, they signed to Island Records and released their debut album, Boy, in 1980. Recording The Unforgettable Fire in 1984 with Brian Eno, at Slane Castle, made a change from the cramped conditions of their previous albums in Windmill Lane, Dublin.

Bono abandoned the cowboy style for a more classic rock star look in 1987, when “With or Without You” became their first American No 1. “Soon they became international celebrities and became somewhat remote, which was necessary for their survival,” adds Henry.

U2 Smoken Hot !

Their massive world tour set to start its second act in two months, U2 are indeed getting ready to ride their “360” wave once again. And now they’ll have a little spring in their steps knowing that they are the band of choice for “Hot Press” readers.

@U2 reports that the results for the magazine’s Readers’ Poll has U2 at the top of five categories! That’s definitely rewarding, since they were completely shut out of wins at the Grammys this year. U2 were honored with being named “Best Irish Group”, “Best Polling Act”, and “Best Live Act”. “360” was named the “Love of the Year” while “No Line” was recognized as “Best Irish Album”.

Thats a pretty cool  category name: “Love of the Year”. I’m really happy “360” won that because whether you liked it or not, it really was an experience. You definitely had to be there to see it in all of its glory. And the amount of work put into creating a show like that is incredible. So U2 and Willie Williams definitely deserve that honor.

U2 didn’t take first prize in all categories though. “Crazy Tonight” placed second in the “Best Irish Single” category and frontman Bono also received second place honors as “Best Irish Male”. What, Larry couldn’t be recognized? He’ll always be the Best Irish Male to me!

So big congratulations to U2 for their well-deserved wins! It’s nice to know they got some joy in winning this time, unlike on this occasion!

U2 3D makes Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

For anyone who didn’t get the chance to see the epic film “U2 3D” or if you’re a fanatic who would like to see it again for the millionth time, it’s your lucky day!

The film, which featured U2 on their “Vertigo” tour, will be showing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, reports @U2 (via the “U23D” Facebook page). And the best part is, it’s going to run for about a year!

Here is a link to the R&R Hall of Fame website about the film.

How about all of you? Favorite “U2 3D” moment”? Anyone interested in checking out the film at the R&R Hall of Fame?

Early U2 Photos Go On Display

There is a U2 photo exhibition about to happen in the UK.

Proud Camden presents U2: The Early Years by award-winning photographer Colm Henry: an exclusive, never -before -seen photographic exploration of popular music’s most commercially successful and critically acclaimed group.

Set to run over lead singer Bono’s 50th birthday, this exhibition charts the group’s beginning from their first gigs and photo-shoots, up until the filming of Rattle & Hum.

A freelance photographer working on emerging Irish music magazine Hot Press, Colm Henry came across a young and unsigned U2 when they were featured in the publication. Gaining the band’s trust Henry was asked to photograph them on a regular basis, and was afforded a unique insight as they grew from an enthusiastic local band into one of the world’s most recongnised names in music.

Henry says: ‘We were both learning together really, honing our trades. I was just starting out and so were they. I wasn’t a pushy kind of person, I think they appreciated that. They trusted me to get a good shot.’

Presenting a cross section of unseen work, this specially selected exhibition is set to shine new light on a band that continues to take the world by storm. See all the photos

Powder/crack cocaine as different as Metallica and U2 ?

Editor Comment: During our editor meeting this morning this article came up. We are going to share the whole article with you. Of course we never thought of our boys to be anything close to “crack” or powder however the writer that posted this artical in the Wisconsin Law Journal makes an interesing case. Its a bit of a long read. Please share your thoughts with us via facebook, twitter or even right here.

Commentary: Powder/crack cocaine as different as Metallica and U2

I recently met a very beautiful and intelligent young attorney who pretty much sets the standard for the perfect woman: in addition to the aforementioned qualities, she’s a member of the Federalist Society and her favorite band is Metallica.

In the course of our conversation, she remarked that she and her husband were going to a Metallica concert that weekend, even though her husband is “actually more of a U2 fan.”

Metellica Early Years For a man my age, that was astounding. Back in 1986, when Metallica released its epic album, “Master of Puppets”, no pretty metal girl would have given a U2 fan the time of day, much less married him. And the U2 crowd hated us even more than we hated them.

It got me thinking about what else has changed since 1986, and my mind turned to the federal sentencing guidelines for cocaine offenses.

Before 1986, there were basically three ways to take cocaine: snort it; mainline it (intravenously); or hotbase it (purify and smoke it).

But in each case you started the process by buying powder cocaine.

People who snorted their cocaine would get the following effects: they would think that they were God’s gift to the world and be oblivious to the fact that everyone else thought they were boring as hell. But that was about it.

Crack Those who hotbased or mainlined their cocaine would instead experience a very short, but incredibly intense rush that epitomized euphoria. The combination of intensity and short duration greatly increased the addictive properties of the drug.

Drug dealers soon discovered they could make more money if they sold cocaine already purified into base form, and the crack cocaine industry was born. The results for society were disastrous. Murder and crime in general skyrocketed.

And while a big stash of cocaine had always made it easier for a man to get lucky, a new class emerged in the wake of crack cocaine – the strawberry, who existed for the sole purpose of exchanging sex for crack.

Individuals who had managed to maintain steady employment for decades, despite recreational use of controlled substances, became useless overnight after discovering crack.

The public feared that children born to crack-addicted mothers would create a massive burden on the taxpayers for decades to come.

And so the next year, the mandatory minimum sentences went into effect, using a ratio that treated 1 gram of crack cocaine as equal to 100 grams of powder cocaine. Since then, thousands of young people with no prior criminal history, whose sole role in drug trafficking was being used as a mule to transport crack from one place to another, have been imprisoned for shockingly long sentences.

Finally, things are changing. The failed policy is coming to an end, something I applaud as much as anyone.

Nevertheless, I am dismayed by the rhetoric of many who support eliminating the crack/powder ratio. Crack and powder cocaine are “pharmacologically identical” is the mantra they repeat ad nauseaum.

A letter from the ACLU sent to U.S. senators says the assumptions that underlie the ratio “are now known to be false,” and that the ratio discriminates based on race.

Of course, no one who has ever met a user of crack cocaine could say with a straight face that there is no difference between crack and powder. There is a huge difference. Nevertheless, given the ease with which powder can be turned into base at the point of consumption, it is unjust to impose massively disparate sentences solely based on the drug’s form at the point of sale.

The crack/powder cocaine ratio was the result of ignorance on the part of well-meaning people who simply didn’t understand how easy it is for consumers to convert powder to cocaine base themselves.

While I support repealing the ratio, I deplore the dissemination of patently false statements about how crack is no worse than powder. Snorting and smoking cocaine are as different as Metallica and U2.

But I suppose the ACLU would say that I’m being naïve, and that telling a few lies is a small price to pay to get results in politics.

U2In any event, let’s conclude with what Metallica has to say about the subject: “Pain monopoly/Ritual misery/Chop your breakfast on a mirror/Taste me you will see/More is all you need/Dedicated to/How I’m killing you.” You’re not going to hear lyrics like that in any lousy U2 song.

U2 and unhappy baseball fans

U2 360 Tour 57 days, 16 hrs, 19 mins, 12 secs are you ready ?

We found this interesting article yesterday that suggested that is was” fashionable to dislike U2 since Bono showed up in an iPod commercial and skipped four through 13 in his Spanish counting lesson. (And I’m sure there are more than a few folks who hopped off the train at Zooropa, too)” Really ? Is that really how most people feel

Baseball has started around of the U.S. Sam Borden of The LoHud Yankees Blog reports that a massive U2 summer tour is going to make many teams take road trips this summer, most prominently the Red Sox, whose odd season-opening and season-closing series at Fenway against the Yankees owe something to the band.

That shouldn’t be a huge problem: U2 only plays concerts in baseball stadiums in Anaheim, Oakland, Toronto, Miami, and Philadelphia. But a U2 date apparently requires so much build-up and tear-down that there must be a 10-day window around the concerts, and that ripples out to the rest of baseball. Combine that with quirks like the Yankees homestanding in September while the Mets travel for the U.S. Open, and putting together a year’s schedule seems fairly difficult, even before considering the whims of television.

But on Opening Day (or Night?), is it really worth whining about the schedule? Baseball’s back. That’s enough to make it a beautiful day.

“I’m wide awake! I’m wide awake

Who Rescued U2's 1st US 1# Song?

Bono and GavinAccording to guitarist The Edge, the band were struggling to complete ‘With Or Without You’ and had considered abandoning the 1987 track before Bono’s childhood friend arrived at the studio.

“We were making The Joshua Tree album and were having trouble with one of the songs,” The Edge told RTE documentary Ladies and Gentlemen, Gavin Friday. “It just wasn’t coming together. I’d just received a new guitar, the Infinite Guitar, so I was in the room playing with the guitar, oblivious to the fact that the others were in the other room listening to a raw blend of ‘With Or Without You’.

“I think they just had the bass and the drums up. Gavin and Bono could hear this guitar and Gavin said, ‘What’s that? That’s it!’”

With the addition of the understated guitar part, the song was chosen to be the album’s lead single and went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks and reached number four in the UK charts.

In an interview for the Arts Lives documentary, Friday, real name Fionán Hanvey, said of his relationship with U2: “I’m a cross between their mother, their father, their schoolteacher, their midwife, their communicator.”
