Berlin, New York, Putin, Obama and The Pope

Berlin:  U2 controls "Mercedes-Benz Arena" for the next few days. While the band performs from their current album and past albums. Bono will slip away for a day to address the UN in New York on some topics that are most dear to his heart.  Bono has never held back is voice for those that can not speak and for a brief moment you might forget he is the leader of the worlds largest rock band. The first of four sold out shows in Berlins' Mercedes-Benz Arena starts off with a sensational spectacle only expected from the boys from Dublin.  The boys have returned to their city. This is the where their boldest work was created some 24 years ago which still sounds current today. "Achtung Baby" the created works all started in a studio in Berlin.  The show for the most part has been set in stone.

They revolutionized the conventional stage structure. Besides the large main day is on the "Mercedes-Benz Arena" that evening a smaller stage in the other corner of the hall, connected by a walkway. About this depends a housewife large video screen that is still accessible and the hall - is divided in the middle or as a mutant video cube suspended above all - depending on your height. During the concert, the four musicians will be split on this stage design again, so really many of the 20,000 spectators come to one or other times closer

Between takes Bono repeatedly opportunity to use the show as a political arena and to promote a solidary dealing with the refugees: "Europe is so far only an idea, but has a feeling," he says before "One" turn is.

The show on Thursday, it offers the grandiose prelude to the big Berlin U2 concert that lasts until Tuesday with a brief trip to New York to be interrupted. At the UN summit where Bono meets Merkel, Obama, Putin and the Pope.

Where was U2 this week?

Well the boys where in Berlin earlier in the week. If you follow The Edge on twitter you got a chance to see the image of the ceiling at the Hansa Ballroom. German news sources said the band was in town to film.

Bono was spotted driving a gren Trabant from the cathedal to Hana studios. This could be part of the release package for Achtung Baby, anniversary edition. So far no official news from the band as to what they where doing in town. Some fans said they heard play back music and other fans said they did not sign autographs and moved pretty quickly thru town. You can still get U2 Concerts Tickets today for all shows.

U2 preformed at the Brandenburg Gate, Berlin

To celebrate 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, and as part of MTV’s Europe Music Awards, U2 performed in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin today. The performance was free, although it was ticketed and limited to 10,000 attendees. Yesterday, the  stageing and lighting were prepared, and earlier today, the band sound checked six songs.Welcome U2 (U2TOURFANS.com) 2009

The band did not play the six songs that they sound checked. However not everything was different from the sound check; One and Magnificent were abbreviated versions, and Sunday Bloody Sunday featured a guest rap by Jay-Z. In a surprise, Beautiful Day was played with the extended “we love you” intro. U2Gigs reports that  this was the first time since 20th of September 2009.

Not with out controversy a two metre barrier has been erected around the Brandenburg gate to keep out people without tickets for the show.

“It’s a shame that a barrier has been set up. It’s stopping many Berliners from hearing the concert,” local politician Frank Henkel told the BBC.

The U2 show is part of the MTV Europe Music Awards, which take place later. Ten thousand tickets were given away free online and snapped up within hours. Now police in the city said  as many as 100,000 people to descended on the square in front of the Brandenburg gate to try and catch a glimpse of U2.

Mr Henkel, Christian Democrat floor leader in the Berlin city-state parliament, said: “It would have been so much better if as many Berliners as possible could have taken part.

“We don’t know who’s responsible for this, whether it’s U2 or MTV. He continued: “10,000 people is a lot, but U2 could have had an even bigger audience enjoying their music at this wonderful location.”

McGuinness said Berliners think it is “pretty ironic” that an event to mark the falling of the wall has resulted in another one being constructed. Fans, too, were displeased.

“It’s completely ridiculous that they are blocking the view,” said Louis-Pierre Boily, a Canadian fan who travelled to Berlin despite failing to secure tickets for the show. “I thought it’s a free show, but MTV probably wants people to watch it on TV to get their ratings up,” he added.

U2, Live Nation, or MTV not really sure who was to blame for the “wall” however it sure did not leave a postive vibe feeling amoung the fans that just wanted to catch some “one” love from their hero’s.
